GALLERY of work by Sue King

Previous posts here are being archived  from June 2021

‘Since the start of the year I have been completing UFOs, including this cushion cover started in a Quilters Guild workshop.  Called ‘Hawaiian Transferred’ I designed the stencil of breadfruit leaves, coloured in with transfer paints and then hand quilted it.

Searching for inspiration for a new piece, I found several pieces bought from The African Fabric Shop - a small stencilled mask and a dyed piece that suggested faces.  With fabrics from my stash of self dyed and commercial material, the work almost designed itself. Thread painting and quilting completed this small hanging for my son.’ to edit.

‘Masks’
Searching for inspiration for new work, I found several pieces bought sometime from The African Fabric Shop - a small printed mask and a dyed piece that suggested ‘faces’ to me.  With further fabrics from my stash of own dyed and commercial fabrics, the piece almost designed itself.  Thread painting and quilting completed this small hanging for my elder son’s birthday.”

Having produced work for 2 exhibitions that were subsequently cancelled or very delayed, I wanted to play and use up some of my large stash of green fabrics. So I have made 2 quilts for the bunk beds for the grandchildren: a jelly roll quilt using a free pattern from Bramble Patch, put out at the start of lockdown 1, and a half-square triangle quilt on which I free machined different leaf shapes.

After a lull working on a piece for another group’s challenge, I am again addressing aTT’s ‘Decay’ challenge.  I have collaged dyed, rusted and mono printed pieces focusing on the different colours noted in the derelict industrial building chosen as my inspiration.  The 2 pieces are worked in greens and brown, and blues and brown with a rusty orange as the linking complementary colour.  I am now doing the intensive machine quilting I love.

New Year, new work, so I have started preparation for our next exhibition.  I have been considering from where to draw my inspiration for a piece for our challenge titled ‘Decay’ - perhaps an old building that I pass fairly often.  The rust, flaking paint and broken windows might provide the setting and possible palette.  Accordingly I have been auditioning some dyed and mono printed fabric, and sketching various settings.’

For a challenge entitled ‘Local Landscapes’ as part of an exhibition put on by “Patchwork People” this summer, I decided to focus on my own garden and my view, with elements of my village framing the main picture.  I have been working through Jean Wells’ book, ‘Intuitive Color and Design’.  So this was an attempt at abstracting what I see daily and to give a feel
of how my local landscape inspires me.  I was not entirely successful as I found it hard not to let figurative elements creep in.

For another category at the same exhibition I did win the Viewers Choice for a small quilt, ‘Night Owl’

I have been working on several recurring themes – Reflections and Shadows, and my African Childhood.  A small piece incorporating reflections, recently made in response to a challenge to celebrate Milton Keynes 50th anniversary, garnered me ‘Runner Up’ and ‘Visitors Choice’ awards.  The photo shows part of it, achieved by applique and machine embroidery and quilting

This picture shows part of a quilt made to contrast ‘my home’ in East Africa and my mother’s yearning to be ‘home’ in England.  Using a technique from Dijanne Cevaal, fabric is freely cut, pieced and appliqued in a naïve style.  Dark blue ‘sea’ is set against green with applique images of home and flight, and machine quilting echoing certain shapes.
