After some hold ups due to lockdowns I have finally almost finished my Stumpwork module for the Diploma in Technical Hand Embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework. I just need to complete the mounting and paperwork and then I can hand it in for assessment. Until it is assessed it is not appropriate to show it all so I am just sharing my favourite part, for the time being.

"Many, many hours of 2019 were spent on my Blackwork module for The Diploma in Technical Hand Embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace.
I was particularly looking forward to the Blackwork module but did find it a significant challenge. I would even dream about it - including that I had more to do when I was more or less finished!
Masses of planning and sampling was needed and I have two fantastic tutors.
This is definitely a one-off. I do enjoy Blackwork but should I do more it will not be quite so complicated
I have now started on my next module which is Stumpwork. Busy with the applique background and sampling at the moment".

I am continuing to work on the Blackwork module of the Royal School of Needlework Diploma course. A portrait of mu father in Blackwork. (Earlier stages can be seen on the Spotlight , Hand Stitch page https://www.allthreadedtogether.com/spotlight.html )

Applique

My textile priority in 2018 was the first module of the Diploma in Technical Hand Embroidery at The Royal School of Needlework - Applique. The brief was to replicate an image and I selected a painting by Lucy Davies (who kindly gave me permission). I chose tweed and silk as my main fabrics, with handmade cording, hand embroidery and wire working, including with beads. I used three different paddings: felt, wadding and carpet felt. It was a very time consuming piece of work but I am thrilled with the outcome.

Lap Quilt
I decided to make a quilt as a wedding present for my niece. Given my other commitments I needed to keep it simple. I have managed to accumulate a stash of batik so decided I would use the batik to create interest while the design would be simple strips, keeping my time commitment on this work to a lowish level.

Blackwork
I am starting a Blackwork module for my Diploma at the Royal School of Needlework. For some practice a took a day class with Lizzy Pye. It was fun to start to learn about the technique with Lizzy's teaching and her Honeybee design.

I remain a member of a Hertfordshire quilting group that I joined before All Threaded Together.  The Hertfordshire group is celebrating its 20 year birthday. To mark this all 30 members have swapped a small piece of fabric to do "something" with. Whatever we each decide to do has to be brought (hopefully finished) to our Christmas Party meeting. Having thought of my usual "cushion" or "bag" ideas I have decided to make a colourful folder cover. This will be a cheerful replacement for the current cardboard folder I am using to keep on going papers and notes relating to my elderley mother. All my pieces of fabric are machined together now but thought is needed as to how I will then make a usable folder cover. I do think it is quite amazing that you can stitch together such random pieces of fabric, some of which you wouldn't choose, and end up with something you like.

I am coming towards the end of the Certificate in Technical Hand Embroidery I am undertaking at The Royal School of Needlework (RSN). So far I have completed three modules: Jacobean Crewel work, Canvas stitching and Silk Shading. Each module involves eight lessons and lots of homework. My final module is Gold Work which I am planning to finish before Christmas. The Certificate involves very traditional working of embroidery but little theory and paperwork - meaning I can concentrate on stitching under the excellent tuition and guidance of the RSN.

When I finish the Certificate I will move onto the Diploma. The principles for the Diploma are the same as the Certificate but there are six modules and work is of a higher standard - fortunately students sign up a module at a time so I don't have to commit too far ahead.

The following photos show the progress of my Gold Work: on my working frame with the start of the padding, gold thread applied to the acorn nuts, the gold threads plunged to the reverse of the acorn nuts and the finished acorns.   I am now working on the cutwork for the tree branch.
