Seed:Root
I was especially taken by one of the few elements of design clearly influenced from nature to be found at 78 - the carved wooden newel post at the foot of the stairs in the lounge.   The contrast between the curving stylised naturalistic seed head design is in marked contrast to the geometric designs in the same room.  Though not in evidence so much at 78, nature is at the root of so much of Mackintosh's designs.
The piece is constructed with pieced and appliquéd hand dyed and commercial cotton fabrics, free machine quilted then embellished with paint and beads.

Counterchange
The hall bay window illuminates a dark room.  This piece is inspired partly by the colours in the curtains and furnishings in this area, and partly by the restoration process with brought the house back, layer by layer, to its original design.
I used a mix of hand dyed and commercial cotton fabrics with fused appliqué which was then machine quilted and layered  with net.

Job’s Tear
This is a negative space design also inspired by the organic curves of the newel post at 78 Derngate.
It is made with African woven tree cotton strip cloth hand stitched with indigo sashiko cotton then mounted on a piece of upcycled kimono fabric. Embellished with Job’s tear grass seed beads.

Goose-tracks
A playful take on the traditional quilt design ‘Flying Geese’, tipping a wink to the geometric designs used extensively in the interiors at 78 Derngate.
Transfer printed Evolon cloth, machine stitched.
