DERNGATE RELATED WORK

The following pieces have been inspired by the architecture and decor of 78 Derngate. I was very struck by the strong geometric elements and strong use of colour.
Picture

"NEWEL"

There is a strong feel to the beautifully designed Newel post in the entrance hall. The fluidity of the post design is in stark contrast to the geometric nature of the rest of the room.
I chose this fabric, a one-off piece of hand painted Batik by Beta in Ghana, because it spoke to me about the fluid and geometric post.
I love working with artisan fabrics from three African designers in particular, I seek them out to kick start a piece of work that has been "cooking" in my head.
Strong colour and line and natural cotton.

"Squares"

The motif is repeated in a number of areas around the house but this piece comes from my recollection of the square trellis which runs up the staircase.

The colours are taken from the wallpaper in the entrance hall.
Made with commercially printed cotton fabrics the elements were all cut from fabric which had been backed in Viseline.
A grid was drawn on a muslin and each element put in place and ironed onto the muslin.

"All Because of the Wallpaper"

Taking the wallpaper motif from the entrance hall and using the methodology described above, triangular sections were ironed in place and then very closely quilted in straight lines mimicking the triangular motif.

Images from 78 Derngate which influenced the design of the above three pieces.
