Old, New, Boro, Blue
Inspired by the Japanese Boro tradition of mending and reworking clothes and textiles. Cloth was patched, darned and reused over and over; pieces were reassembled using sashiko stitching in order to prolong their life and avoid waste. Cloth from an adult’s jacket might find itself reworked into clothing for a child then later into assorted domestic items, their function changing sometimes over generations.
Scraps of Japanese fabrics laid over woollen cloth and hand stitched.

Purton Hulk
Inspired by the decaying hulks of barges that shore up the banks of the Severn at Purton in Gloucestershire. The function of the barges has changed over time; having fulfilled their working lives, they were beached to protect the river banks from erosion.
Needle felted fibres and fabric scraps, machine and hand stitched.

Elements of Cleeve
This piece is inspired by what remains of the floors, walls and ceilings in the ruins of Cleeve Abbey in Somerset. The Abbey was mostly destroyed in the dissolution of the monasteries but significant parts escaped unscathed and today we can appreciate not only how the buildings would have looked but the changes the passage of time has wrought upon the surfaces.
Printed cotton fabrics, old maps, digital photographs.
