STAIRCASE
34 cm by 54 cm
Fabric paint, Inktense, machine and hand stitch on cotton
A study of a photocopy of a spiral staircase in a decayed and abandoned building, where the black ink on the printer decayed and abandoned me, resulting in an image pared back to a glorious burst of colours and a dominant spiral lacking the stair treads. The original image was rich and dark in its tones, but fairly monochromatic, and the anomaly of the photocopy effected an exploration of texture and colour, with a painterly approach, using simple stitches.

STRIATION
64 cm by 46 cm
Fabric paint, acrylic paint, cotton, machine quilting
Study of an abandoned and decaying building interior, with peeling paint and windows that suffered whilst photocopying with no black ink. The resulting image revealed lines and blocks of colour, with blank spaces and areas with the barest glimpse of the original image.

INNER PIECE
Measurements 30 cm x 116 cm
Calico, cotton and other natural fabric remnants, dye, machine and hand stitch
A reflective study and mindful stitching piece worked as an antidote to the stresses of starting a new business through the pandemic, using the calico off cuts and other pieces left from the construction of inner pads for seat pads. Small areas of straight stitch represent clear thought and organisation, smoothly curved areas gentle moments of tranquillity and the unstitched negative spaces of no thought, progression or movement. Along the journey are small cross stitches, ruffled, uneven edges and piping bumps representing challenges and moments of unease or anxiety. The whole strip is mounted on a tranquil blue dyed, hand coloured and seed stitched background, constructed from an old sheet. There are darker, stormier areas where the colour and stitching are more intense.
